Accolate

What is it?

A leukotriene antagonist, zafirlukast, which limits the effect of the inflammatory mediator, produced as white film-coated tablets (20mg) showing name of company, tablet and the strength.

Medical Uses

Asthma

Dosage

1 tablet twice per day, in between meals. Not recommended for children.

Special Care

The elderly or pregnant. Not to be used in acute attacks or in place of steroids. Stop treatment if there is hepatotoxicity (damage to liver) or signs of Churg-Strauss syndrome (allergic reaction resulting in granulomas in the lungs, i. e. nodular tissue).

Avoid Use

During breastfeeding, liver damage or moderate to severe kidney disorder.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Aspirin, smoking, warfarin, theophylline and terfenadine (an anti-histamine).

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset, headache, hypersensitivity responses. Possible increase in respiratory infections in the elderly.
