Actonel

What is it?

A biphosphonate, Risedronate sodium, available as oval f-c tablets in two strengths; 5mg (yellow), 30mg (white). Marked with strength and RSN.

Medical Uses

Paget's disease of bone; to maintain or augment bone mass in women undergoing sustained corticosteroid therapy after the menopause; where postmenopausal osteoporosis exists, to reduce risk of hip or vertebral fractures. To prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis in women considered to be at risk.

Dosage

Adults; for Paget's disease: 30mg once each day for 8 weeks. Other conditions: 5mg once daily. All tablets to be swallowed with water while upright, upon getting up, at least half an hour before any other food or drink is taken at breakfast. Alternatively, swallow while upright at least two hours from eating or drinking at other times of the day. Allow at least 30 minutes before going to bed, if taken in the evening.

Special Care

Disorders of the oesophagus, disorders of bone or mineral metabolism. Ensure vitamin D and calcium intake in diet is good.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe kidney disorders, patients with low blood calcium levels.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Magnesium, calcium, aluminium or iron salts.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset and pain, headache, muscle and bone pain, rash, short-lived fluctuations in blood calcium and phosphate levels. Rarely, weight loss, feverish symptoms, dizziness, pains in chest, fluid build up in peripheral tissues, growths, broiichitis, nocturia, respiratory effects, inflammation of eyes and sinuses, tinnitus. All adverse symptoms should be reported to CSM.
