Adalat
What is it?
A calcium antagonist and vasodilator, available as liquid-filled orange capsules, containing the active ingredient nifedipine (5mg and 10mg). Also, as sustained-release tablets and as a preparation for injection.
Medical Uses
Angina and Raynaud's phenomenon.
Dosage
10mg 3 times a day (5mg in elderly patients) in first instance, depending upon response, up to 60mg a day thereafter. Capsules taken with or immediately after food.
Special Care
Patients with significant left ventricle disorders or congestive heart failure, low blond pressure, kidney and liver disease.
Avoid Use
If pain worsens during treatment, pregnant and nursing mothers, children, patients with very low blood pressure.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Antihypertensivedrugs; quinidine and cimetidine.
Known Side Effects
Dizziness, flushing, nausea, palpitations, sweating, headaches, fluid retention, digestive upset, increased frequency of urination, drowsiness and insomnia. Rarely jaundice and swelling of gums.
