Adcortyl
What is it?
A potent topical steroid preparation (a corticosteroid), containing the active ingredient triamcinolone acetonide 0.1%, as cream or ointment.
Medical Uses
Eczema and psoriasis, which has proved unresponsive to less potent preparations of corticosteroids. Can Also, be used to treat external ear infections and neurodermatitis.
Dosage
Apply sparingly to affected area 2 to 4 times each day and less frequently as condition improves.
Special Care
For children and babies, especially face and neck.
Avoid Use
Acne (including acne rosacea), any skin conditions caused by ringworm, fungi, viruses, tuberculosis, leg ulcers, pregnant women and long term use. Also, fungal or bacterial infections which have not been treated.
Known Side Effects
Suppression of adrenal gland function, skin thinning and retention of fluid. Also, available: adcortyl with graneodin (an antimicrobial agent) which includes the antibiotic neomycin. This contains 0.1% triamcinolone acetonide, 0.25% neomycin (as sulphate) and 0.025% gramicidin as cream. It is used as above but where a bacterial infection may additionally be present. Adcortyl in Orabase is available as an oral paste used to treat mouth ulcers and other oral inflammations. It is applied 2 to 4 times daily and should not be used long term or by pregnant women. Adcortyl containing 10mg/ml triamcinolone acetonide is available for injection intradermally or into a joint. Used intradermally to treat scaly skin diseases, alopecia areata (patchy hair loss). Used intra-articularly to treat joint pain, stiffness and swelling caused especially by rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, tenosynovitis and osteoarthrosis (osteoarthritis).
