Adgyn Combi

What is it?

A hormonal preparation of oestrogen and progestogen available in packs comprising 12 white tablets each containing 2mg oestradiol alone and 16 pink tablets containing 2mg oestradiol and 1mg norethisterone.

Medical Uses

Hormone replacement therapy to alleviate menopausal symptoms in women who have not had a hysterectomy.

Dosage

Women: 1 tablet daily starting with white (oestradiol only) tablets. Take continuously. If cycle is present, take first tablet on 5th day.

Special Care

Women who are judged to be at increased risk of thromboembolism, patients undergoing surgery, women immobilised due to accident or illness, trauma or injury. Also, ongoing, mild liver disorders (checks required on liver function every 2 to 3 months). Women with any of the following require careful monitoring: high blood pressure, uterine fibroids, nodules in breast, fibrocystic disease, multiple sclerosis, impaired kidney function, porphyria, epilepsy, migraine, cholelithiasis, diabetes, elevated blood calcium levels, tetany, asthma, otosclerosis. Women should be encouraged to self-examine breasts and to have breast screening and cervical smear tests.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, previous breast or other cancer, especially if hormone-dependant, family history of breast cancer, thromboembolic disorders, serious liver, kidney or heart disease, Rotor syndrome or Dubin Johnson syndrome.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Drugs that induce liver enzymes.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset, sickness and nausea, tender and enlarged breasts, weight gain, skin itching and redness, dizziness and headache, rise in blood pressure, decrease in glucose tolerance, deterioration in existing varicose veins, cholestatic jaundice, impaired liver function. Increased risk of thromboembolic episode, breast cancer. In the event of any of the following, drug should be discontinued: planned surgery, thromboemnbolic episode or thrombophlebitis, severe headaches or migraine, disturbance of vision, serious rise in blood pressure, hepatitis, jaundice, severe itching of whole body, seizures, pregnancy.
