Adipine MR

What is it?

A Class II Calcium antagonist (a dihydropyridine), containing nifedipine. Available as pink tablets, sustained release, in two strengths, 10mg and 20mg.

Medical Uses

Prevention of angina, high blood pressure.

Dosage

Adults: initially, 1x10mg tablet twice each day after meal. Dosage adjusted according to response to a maximum of 40mg daily.

Special Care

Diabetes, people receiving dialysis treatment, heart failure, severe low blood pressure, impaired liver function, elderly persons.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, within 1 month of heart attack, cardiogenic shock, angina which is not stable, aortic stenosis, if severe.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Rifampicin, cimetidine, diltiazem, antihypertensives, magnesium sulphate given intravenously, grapefruit juice.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset, gum disease, headache, fluid retention, rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure, tremor, dizziness, muscle pain, flushing, loss of energy, vision disturbance, breast enlargement. Possible ischaemic pain (drug should be withdrawn), heart attack.
