Adizem

What is it?

A calcium antagonist and vasodilator containing the active ingredient diltiazem hydrochloride. Available as tablets in 3 forms: ADIZEM 60-coded 60/DL, 60ing white capsules. ADIZEM-SRwhite 90mg; brown 120mg; white/ brown 180mg. Also, as 120mg white tablets (DL/120). All continuous-release capsules. ADIZEM XL-pink/ blue 120mg; pink/blue 180mg; red/ blue 240mg; maroon/blue 300mg. All continuous-release capsules marked with strength.

Medical Uses

Angina and hypertension.

Dosage

60mg 3 times a day increasing if required to a maximum of 480mg. Elderly, twice a day in first instance.

Special Care

Patients with heart block, reduced function in left ventricle of heart, bradycardia, diabetes.

Avoid Use

In children, pregnant and nursing mothers, severe heart block or bradycardia, impairment of kidney and liver function.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Digoxin, β-blockers, antihypertensive drugs, cardiac depressants, diazepam, cyclosporin, cimetidine, theophylline and cartamazepine.

Known Side Effects

Swelling of ankles, nausea, headache, bradycardia, rash, first degree heart block.
