Akineton
What is it?
An anticholinergic preparation containing the active ingredient biperiden hydrochloride, used to counter the effects of Parkinsonism. It is available as white, scored tablets with Knoll logo, containing 2mg biperiden hydrochloride and as a preparation containing biperiden lactate 5mg/ml, for slow intravenous or intramuscular injection.
Medical Uses
Parkinsonism and treatment of symptoms of drug-induced Parkinsonism.
Dosage
Tablets: in adults, 1mg twice daily in first instance gradually increasing to 2mg 3 times a day. After initial period, the usual daily dose is in the order of 3-12mg 3 times a day. Injection: 2.5-4mg per ml up to 4 times per day.
Special Care
In patients with liver, kidney or heart disease. Treatment must be discontinued gradually.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnant and nursing mothers, some types of glaucoma, patients with untreated urine retention or gastro-intestinal obstruction.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Cns depressant drugs and other anti-Parkinsonism drugs.
Known Side Effects
Dry mouth, drowsiness, blurred vision and gastro-intestinal disorders. More rarely, urine retention and tachycardia and possible allergic reactions.
