Aldactide

What is it?

A proprietary preparation containing a potassium-sparing diuretic (encourages potassium to be retained and not eliminated in kidney) combined with a thiazide (a drug which inhibits the reabsorption of chloride and sodium in the kidney). The preparation is available in two strengths. ALDACTIDE 25 contains 25mg spironalactone and 25mg hydroflumethiazide in buff-coloured tablets marked Searle 101.ALDACTIDE 50 (Gold Cross) contains 50mg of each drug.

Medical Uses

Congestive heart failure.

Dosage

Aldactide 25: adults, 4 tablets daily with food in first instance with a maximum, of eight. Aldactide 50: two tablets daily with a maximum of four. In children: 1.5 to 3mg per kg of body weight given at intervals through the day.

Special Care

The elderly, liver and kidney disorders, pregnant mothers, diabetic patients, gout, long-term use in young people. Blood tests and monitoring of electrolyte levels may be required.

Avoid Use

Nursing mothers, patients with liver or kidney failure, hypercalcaemia, hyperkalaemia, Addison's disease, sensitivity to sulfonamide drugs.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Potassium supplements, other potassium-sparing diuretic drugs, NSAIDs, anti-diabetic drugs, antihypertensive drugs, ACE inhibitors and cardiac glycosides.

Known Side Effects

Metabolic disorders, disturbance of electrolyte balance in blood, rash, drowsiness, sensitivity to light, gastro-intestinal upset, menstrual irregularities, deepening of voice.
