Aldactone
What is it?
A diuretic, potassium-sparing preparation containing spironolactone. Tablets available: 25mg buff marked Searle 39, 50mg off-white (Searle 916), 100mg buff (Searle 314).
Medical Uses
Congestive heart failure, oedema caused by cirrhosis of the liver, malignancy or nephrotic syndrome, primary aldosteronism (overproduction of the adrenal hormone, aldosterone).
Dosage
In adults with congestive heart failure, 100mg daily in first instance increasing to 400mg taken with food. Thereafter, 75 to 200mg per day. Children, 3mg per kg of body weight in first instance in several doses.
Special Care
Pregnant mothers, longterm use in young people patients with liver or kidney disorders. Blood electrolyte levels may need to be monitored.
Avoid Use
Nursing mothers, patients with kidney failure, Addison's disease, and hyperkalaemia.
Known Side Effects
Gastro-intestinal upset, rash, headache, disturbance of electrolyte levels, metabolic disturbance, breast enlargement, deepening of voice, menstrual irregularities, confusion, ataxia (unsteadiness).
