Aldomet

What is it?

A centrally acting (on central nervous system), antihypertensive preparation containing the drug methyldopa. It is available as tablets or in ampoules for injection. May be used in combination with a diuretic drug. Aldomet tablets are available in three strengths all marked Aldomet and coloured yellow: Aldomet 125mg code 135; Aldomet 250mg code 401, Aldomet 500mg code 516.

Medical Uses

Hypertension, especially use ful for hypertension of pregnancy.

Dosage

In adults, 250mg 2 to 3 times a day in first instance with an eventual maximum of 3g at 2-day intervals. In children, 10mg per kg of body weight each day in 2 to 4 separate doses.

Special Care

History of liver disease, kidney disorders, haemolytic anaemia, undergoing anaesthesia.

Avoid Use

Liver disease, a disease of the adrenal glands called phaeochromocytoma, patients with depression.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Sympathomimetics, other hypertensives, MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants, lithium and phenothiazines.

Known Side Effects

Depression, sleepiness, headache, dry mouth, nasal congestion, gastrointestinal upsets, bradycardia, jaundice, haemolytic anaemia, positive Coombs test.
