Algicon

What is it?

A preparation which acts as an antacid and reflux suppressant containing 500mg of magnesium alginate, 360mg magnesium carbonate/aluminium hydroxide co-dried gel, 320mg of magnesium carbonate and 100mg of potassium bicarbonate in each tablet. Available as white tablets marked Rorer and Algicon. Also, ALGICON SUSPENSION, a mint or aniseed-flavoured solution containing 250mg of magnesium alginate, 140mg of magnesium carbonate/aluminium hydroxide co-dried gel, 174mg of magnesium carbonate and 50mg of potassium bicarbonate per 5ml.

Medical Uses

Problems with stomach acid: during pregnancy, hiatus hernia, re- flux oesophagitis, over production of stomach acid, gastric reflux and heartburn.

Dosage

Adults, tablets: 1 or 2 taken after main meals and at bedtime, i. e. 4 times daily. Adults, solution: 10 to 20ml after main meals and at bedtime.

Special Care

Diabetes (due to high sugar content of tablets).

Avoid Use

Children, very debilitated pa tients, people with kidney failure.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Tetracycline antibiotics.
