Amikin
What is it?
A broad spectrum antibiotic/ aminoglycoside preparation, available as a suspension in vials for injection, containing 100mg or 500mg of amikacin as sulphate per 2ml.
Medical Uses
Serious infections caused by bacteria sensitive to amikacin. Generally for hospital use.
Dosage
Adults and children; 15mg per kg of body weight; total quantity divided into two doses daily given by intramuscular or intravenous injection. Very severe infections may require higher dose of 500mg repeated every 8 hours. The maximum is 1.5g daily and can be continued for up to 10 days or to a top limit of 15g. New born infants; 10mg per kg of body weight, at start of treatment then 15mg per kg body weight, twice each day in divided doses.
Special Care
Kidney impairment, patient must be fully hydrated.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Anaesthetics, drugs that black neuromuscular junction, frusemide, ethacrynic acid.
Known Side Effects
Ototoxicity (i. e. harmful effect on 8th cranial nerve affecting organs of balance and hearing), nephrotoxicity (toxic effects on kidneys).
