Amoxil
What is it?
A broad-spectrum antibiotic, penicillin preparation, available as capsules in two different strengths containing 250mg and 500mg amoxycillin (as trihydrate), respectively. The capsules are gold/maroon and each marked with strength and name. Also, AMOXIL SYRUP SF, available in two different strengths, containing 250mg and 500mg of amoxycillin (as trihydrate) per 5ml of sugar-free suspension. Also, AMOXIL PAEDIATRIC SUSPENSION, containing 125mg of amoxycillin (as trihydrate) per 1.25ml of liquid.
Medical Uses
Infections - ear, nose and throat, urinary tract, respiratory, soft tissue.
Dosage
Adults and children aged over 10 years; 250mg to 500mg three times each day. Children aged less than 10 years; 125mg to 250mg three times each day. Infants aged under 6 months should receive paediatric suspension. Also, AMOXIL 3g SACHET SF, containing 3g of amoxicillin (as trihydrate) in a sugar-free, sorbitolbased powder.
Medical Uses
Acute and severe and recurrent infections: urinary, respiratory, gonorrhoea, tooth abscess (in addition to surgical drainage). Also, prevention of bacterial endocarditis (inflammation and infection of the endocardium, the membrane lining the heart, cardiac veins and arteries and forming the cusps of the valves).
Dosage
Adults and children over 10 years old; respiratory tract infections: 3g twice each day. Urinary infections: 3gwith one further 3g dose after 10 to 12 hours. Gonorrhoea: single, 3g dose. Tooth abscess: 3g dose one hour before surgery followed by further 3g dose in 8 hours, if necessary. Prevention of bacterial endocarditis: 3g dose before dental surgery, followed by one further 3g dose after 6 hours, if necessary. Children; prevention of bacterial endocarditis: aged 5 years and under, 750mg; aged 5 to 10 years, 1.5g. All doses given one hour before dental surgery. Also, AMOXIL INJECTION, available as powder in vials for reconstitution and injection, in three strengths, containing 250mg, 500mg and lg of amoxycillin (as sodium salt).
Medical Uses
Severe bacterial infections.
Dosage
Adults; either lg given intravenously every 6 hours in very severe infections or 500mg given by intramuscular injection every 6 hours. Children; 50 to 100mg per kg of body weight each day in divided doses.
Special Care
Impaired kidney function, infectious mononucleosis.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Allopurinol, anticoagulant drugs.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, allergic reactions. Rarely, cholestatic jaundice, hepatitis, effects on blood and central nervous system.
