Androcur
What is it?
An anti-androgen hormonal preparation containing cyproterone acetate, for use under hospital supervision. Available as white, scored tablets (50mg), marked BV in a hexagon.
Medical Uses
Male sexual deviation and severe hypersexuality. ( Also, acne and abnormal hair growth in women, prostate cancer in men). Dose: adult men only, 1 tablet in morning and evening after food.
Special Care
Patient consent is vital. Drug inhibits sperm production resulting in reversible infertilityy. Abnormal sperm are produced and liver tumours have been produced in animals. Ability to drive and perform skilled tasks impaired. Ineffective where hypersexuality is caused by chronic alcoholism. Special care in patients with diabetes mellitus and disorders of adrenal glands. Blood (haemoglobin) and sperm tests and monitoring of liver and adrenal gland function is advisable
Avoid Use
Males under 18 years of age or those in whom bones and testes are not fully matured. Patients with thrombosis, embolism, severe liver disease, malignant or wasting diseases. Severe chronic depression.
Known Side Effects
Depression, tiredness, weight gain, breast enlargement, changes in hair growth, rarely, osteoporosis.
