Anexate

What is it?

An antagonist to the effects of benzodiazepines used in anaestheseia, diagnostic procedures and intensive care. It contains 100µg of flumazenil per ml of solution and is administered by means of intravenous injection or infusion.

Medical Uses

Reversal of sedative effects of benzodiazepines in anaesthesia, intensive care and diagnostic investigations.

Dosage

By injection, 200µg given over 15 seconds. Repeated doses of 100µg at one minutes intervals if needed. Usual dose in the order of 300-600µg with a maximum of 1mg (possibly 2mg in intensive care procedures) . By infusion (if drowsiness persists after initial injection), 100-400µg per hour according to patient response.

Special Care

Rapid injection should be avoided especially in patients who have had major surgery, head injury or liver disorders

Avoid Use

Epileptic patients who have received sustained doses of benzodiazepines.

Known Side Effects

Vomiting, nausea, flushing. If wakening is too rapid patient may be anxious, agitated and fearful. Intensive care patients may have short- lived increase in heart rate and blood pressure. Rarely, convulsions may occur especially in epileptic patients.
