What is it?

An antipsychotic drug available as white tablets containing 0.25mg (butyrophenone) benperidol marked Janssen, A and 0.25.

Medical Uses

Antisocial, deviant sexual behaviour.

Dosage

Adults, 0.25mg to 1.5mg per day in divided doses. Elderly or debilitated patients, half adult dose.

Special Care

Patients with epilepsy, Parkinsonism, heart disease, kidney or liver disorders, glaucoma, acute infections, elderly persons, pregnant or nursing mothers. Also, those with history of jaundice, underactive thyroid gland, myasthenia gravis, enlarged prostate gland. Regular blood counts and tests of liver function should be carried out during extensive therapy.

Avoid Use

Children, symptoms of central nervous system disturbance (pyramidal or extrapyramidal effects).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Alcohol, antihypertensive, antidepressant and anticonvulsive drugs, analgesic drugs, central nervous system depressants, levodopa and antidiabetic drugs.

Known Side Effects

Muscle spasms of eyes, neck, back, face, Parkinson-like symptoms (tremor and rigidity), dry mouth, nasal stiffness, irregular heartbeat, palpitations, blurring of vision, blood changes, jaundice, drowsiness, fatigue, low blood pressure, weight gain, impotence, breast enlargement, hypothermia (in elderly), constipation, rarely, fits.
