Antepsin
What is it?
A cytoprotectant (cell-surface protectant) preparation available in the form of tablets and suspension. The tablets are scored, white, oblong in shape and contain lg sucralfate, marked Antepsin on one side and W�39 on reverse. ANTEPSIN SUSPENSION contains lg/5ml of solution.
Medical Uses
Gastric and duodenal ulcers, chronic gastritis, prevention of haemorrhage from stress, ulceration iii patients who are seriously ill.
Dosage
Tablets, adults 2g twice a day in the morning and at bedtime or lg four times a day one hour before meals. Maximum dose 8g per day. Treatment period usually 4-6 weeks, sometimes up to 12 weeks. Prevention (prophylaxis) of stress ulceration, lg suspension 6 times a day with a maximum of 8g daily.
Special Care
Patients with kidney failure, pregnancy and lactation.
Avoid Use
Children and patients with severe kidney failure
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Antibacterial drugs (ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin and tetracycline), warfarin, phenytoin, Hz antagonists, digoxin, ketoconazole - allow 2 hours to elapse before using antepsin. Enteral feeds - allow 1 hour to elapse before using antepsin.
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upsets- constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, nausea, dry mouth, rash, back pain, dizziness, sleeplessness, drowsiness, vertigo are possible. Rarely, intestinal obstruction.
