What is it?

An antihypertensive and angictensin II antagonist, irbesartan, available as white oval tablets marked with a heart and numbered 2771, 2772 and 2773 (75mg, 150mg and 300mg).

Medical Uses

Hypertension, kidney disease in patients with Type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

Dosage

150mg per day to start, can be increased to 300mg or other antihypertensives used. Over 75 years, start at 75mg then according to response. Not recommended for children.

Special Care

Heart failure, kidney or liver dysfunction, renovascular hypertension, aortic or mitral stenosis, haemodialysis, obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Monitor potassium serum and creatinine levels, correct volume and/or salt depletion before treatment.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, primary aldosteronism (a condition of the adrenal glands).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Lithium, potassium supplements and diuretics.

Known Side Effects

Dizziness and headache, musculoskeletal pain. Report all adverse reactions to Committee on the Safety of Medicines.
