What is it?
Preparations of recombinant human erythropoietin in solutions of different strengths, comprising darbepoetin Alfa. The solutions are available in pre-prepared syringes at the following concentrations: 10µg per 0.4ml, 15µg per 0.375ml, 20µg per 0.5ml, 30µg per 0.3ml, 40µg per 0.4ml, 50µg per 0.5ml, 60µg per 0.3ml, 80µg per 0.4ml, 100µgper 0.5ml, 150µg per 0.3ml.
Medical Uses
Anaemia connected with chronic kidney failure.
Dosage
Adults and children aged over 11 years; 0.45µg per kg of body weight given by a single intravenous or subcutaneous injection once each week. Dose is increased or decreased according to haemoglobin response, as directed by physician.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, heart disease and congestive heart failure, liver disease, epilepsy, sickle cell anaemia. Blood potassium, iron and haemoglobin levels must be monitored before and during treatment and regular checking of blood pressure is required.
Avoid Use
Children less than 11 years, patients with high blood pressure that is not controlled, those with hypersensitivity to recombinant human erythropoietin.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Cyclosporins.
Known Side Effects
Pain and possible thrombosis near injection site, headache, high blood pressure. All adverse reactions must be reported to the CSM.
