Arixtra

What is it?

An antithrombotic, Factor Xa inhibitor comprising fondapurin, a synthetic pentasaecharide with litttle effect on the function of platelets. A solution containing 5mg per ml of fondaparin sodium in pre-prepared syringes ready for use.

Medical Uses

Used in hospital following major orthopaedic surgery (on the legs/ limbs) to prevent thrombosis.

Dosage

Adults and young people over 17 years of age; 2.5mg into the abdominal wall by deep, sub-cutaneous injection, once each day. First injection to be given 6 hours after surgery and thereafter for 5 to 9 days.

Special Care

Elderly people, pregnant women, history of bleeding, serious liver impairment, moderate kidney disorders, persons who are light or underweight.

Avoid Use

Children, breastfeeding, serious kidney impairment, thrombocytopenia-type 11, induced by heparin, bacterial infection of the endocardium (membrane lining the heart).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Gp 11 b/111 a antagonists, NSAIDs, heparins, desirudin, antiplatelet drugs, fibrinolytics.

Known Side Effects

Bleeding, anaemia, fluid retention, abnormal results from liver tests, thrombocytopenia ( a notable decline in blood platelets), thrombocytupenic purpurc (anaemia, neurological effects and bleeding). Any adverse side effects must be reported to the CSM.
