Aromasin

What is it?

A specific, anticancer drug used in secondary thereapy which lessens the conversion of androgen to oestrogen and inhibits hormone dependent tumour growth. Comprises an aromatase inhibitor containing 25mg of exemestane in each white, sugar coated tablet. Tablets are marked 7663.

Medical Uses

Secondary treatment of postmenopausal breast cancer which has advanced following anti-oestrogen therapy.

Dosage

Postmenopausal women; 1 tablet each day after eating a meal.

Special Care

Liver or kidney disease; tests for levels of reproductive hormones are required before treatment begins.

Avoid Use

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, pre-menopausal women.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Oestrogens, certain drugs metabolised by CYP3A4.

Known Side Effects

Abnormal blood conditions, indigestion, constipation, nausea, abdominal pains, weight loss, hot flushes, sweating, headache, depression, insomnia, hair loss, tiredness, malaise, dizziness, fluid retention in peripheral areas. Any adverse side effects must be reported to the CSM.
