Asacol
What is it?
A preparation of the salicylate drug, mesalazine, available as tablets and suppositories. Tablets (400mg strength) are oblong, red and resin-coated. Suppositories are available in two strengths containing 250mg and 500mg. Also, ASACOL FOAM ENEMA is available.
Medical Uses
To induce and maintain remission in ulcerative colitis and to treat acute attacks of this condition.
Dosage
Adults, tablets, acute attack, 6 daily in divided doses. For maintenance, 3-6 tablets daily in divided doses. Asacol suppositories, adults 750-1500mg daily in divided doses with last dose at night.
Special Care
Elderly persons, pregnant and nursing mothers, patients with kidney disease, elevated blood urea levels, proteinuria.
Avoid Use
Children, patients with severe kidney disease, known allergy to salicylates or kidney sensitivity to sulphasalazine.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Lactulose, substancewhich increases acidity of motions
Known Side Effects
Gastrointestinal upset, headache. Rarely, kidney failure, nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, lung allergies, rash, inflammation of heart and pericardium or peripheral nerves, blood changes. Patients should report any adverse side effects to their doctor - further tests maybe needed.
