What is it?
An analogue of vitamin D in the form of a solution as Dihydrotachysterol, 0.25mg per ml.
Medical Uses
Underactivity of the parathyroid glands (lack of parathyroid hormone) causing low blood calcium levels and neuromuscular tetany (cramps, spasm).
Dosage
Adults: 3 to 5ml by mouth for 3 days; maintenance dose: 1 to 7ml each week, according to specific need.
Special Care
Pregnancy; blood calcium levels should be monitored.
Avoid Use
Children, breast feeding, patient with elevated blood calcium or vitamin levels, allergy to nuts.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Thiazide diuretics, cholestyramine, cardiac glycosides.
Known Side Effects
Headaches, elevated blood calcium levels, vertigo, appetite loss, thirst, urgency of urination and polyuria, lethargy, stupor, paralysis.
