What is it?
An antimalarial and amoebicide drug, 4 Aminoquinoline, containing chloroquine phosphate, available as white, scored tablets containing 155mg chloroquine phosphate.
Medical Uses
Prevention and treatment of malaria, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus (inflammatory disease of skin and some internal organs), amoebic hepatitis.
Dosage
Prevention of malaria; adults, 2 tablets as one dose on the same day each week commencing 1 week before entering affected area and continuing for 4 weeks after leaving. Children should take in the same way at a dose rate of 5mg per kg of body weight. Treatment of amoebic hepatitis, adults only, four tablets each day for two days then one tablet twice daily for two to three weeks.
Special Care
Pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, breast-feeding, patients with epilepsy and some other neurological conditions, psoriasis, porphyria, severe gastro-intestinal disorders. Regular eye tests may be needed during treatment.
Known Side Effects
Gastro-intestinal upset, headache, hair loss, loss of pigment, skin rashes, blurred vision, opacity of cornea, retinal damage, blood changes, psychological disturbance, neurological effects.
