Becotide

What is it?

A corticosteroid preparation, beclomethasone diproprionate, available in the form of an aerosol of different strengths for inhalation. Becotide-50 (50µg per metered inhalation), Gecotide-100 (100µg) and Becotide-200 (200µg).

Medical Uses

Prevention of bronchial asthma.

Dosage

Adults, 400µg each day in 2, 3 or 4 divided doses. If asthma is severe, 600-800µg may be required in first instance in daily divided doses. This should be reduced as condition improves. Children, 100µg twice each day increasing to 400µg in two to four divided doses, if required and according to response.

Special Care

Pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with active or quiescent pulmonary tuberculosis, those transferring from systemic steroids. Risk of suppression of adrenal glands and other systemic effects with high doses and proplonged use. Height of children should be monitored with long term usage.

Known Side Effects

Hoarseness, paradoxical bronchospasm, fungal infections of throat and mouth.
