What is it?
A preparation of recombinant human Factor IX available as a powder in vials, with solution, for reconstitution. Comprises nonacog alfa available in three strengths with nominal Factor IX activities of 250i11, 500i11 amd 1,000i11.
Medical Uses
To prevent arid control bleeding in people with haemophilia B who have already received treatment.
Dosage
Children and adults; as directed by physician according to manufacturer's specifications, depending upon body weight, severity of bleeding, individual factors and presence of inhibitors. Given in hospital by slow intravenous infusion with monitoring.
Special Care
Patient must be monitored for appearance of anti-Factor IX antibodies, liver dysfunction, coagulation disorders, thrombotic conditions. Special care needed post-operatively and in new-born infants.
Known Side Effects
Development of inhibitors, malaise, headache, dizziness, fever, burning pain in jaw, alteration of sense of taste, cough, phlebitis, pain at site of infusion. Withdraw if patient develops hypersensitive reactions. All adverse side effects must be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines.
