Betadine
What is it?
An antiseptic preparation available in various forms, all containing povidone-iodine. BETADINE OINTMENT contains 10% povidone-iodine.
Medical Uses
Pressure sores (bed sores) and stasis ulcers (lesions on the lower leg caused by clogged veins).
Dosage
Adults and children over 2 years; apply to affected area once of twice each day and cover with dressing. Maximum treatment period is 2 weeks. BETADINE PESSARIES each contain 200mg povidone-iodine and are supplied with applicator. Also, BETADINE VAGINAL GEL, containing 10% povidone-iodine, supplied with applicator. Also, BETADINE VC KIT, comprising a 10% solution of povidone-iodine for dilution to form a cleansing solution, supplied with applicator.
Medical Uses
Vaginitis - non-specific, trichomonal and candidal.
Dosage
Women only; 1 pessary inserted in the morning or use gel at night and cleansing solution in the morning. Treatment to continue for a minimum period of two weeks, including during menstruation. BETADINE GARGLE AND MOUTHWASH comprises a 1% solution of povidone-iodine.
Medical Uses
Acute infections of mouth and throat and for general oral cleansing.
Dosage
Adults and children over 6 years; either use as supplied or dilute with equal part warm water: gargle and rinse round mouth for 1/z a minute without swallowing and then spit out. Use up to 4 times each day for up to 2 weeks. BETADINE dry powder spray contains 2.5% povidone-iodine; BETADINE ANTISEPTIC PAINT contains 10% povidone-iodine in an alcohol-based solution; BETADINE CREAM contains 5% povidone-iodine.

Infected skin wounds and lesions.
Dosage
Adults and children; powder: spray onto wound from a distance of about 15 cm. Paint: apply to affected area twice each day and leave to dry. Cream; adults and children over two years: apply to affected area, as needed. BETADINE SKIN CLEANSER contains 4% povidone-iodine in the form of a solution.

Dosage
Adults and children over 2 years; use in place of soap twice each day. Children under 2years; do not use for more than 3 days. BETADINE ANTISEPTIC SOLUTION contains 10% povidone-iodine in a water-based solution. BETADINE ALCOHOLIC SOLUTION contains 10% povidone-iodine in an alcohol-based solution. BETADINE SURGICAL SCRUB contains 7.5% povidone-iodine in a non-ionic solution with a detergent base.

Disinfection of the skin prior to surgery.
Avoid Use
Disorders of the thyroid gland.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Lithium.
