What is it?
An Antimuscarinic Or Anticholinergic Preparation Used In The Treatment Of Parkinsonism. It Is Thought That Antimuscarinic Drugs Act To Correct The Excess Of Acetylcholine Believed To Be The Result Of Dopamine Deficiency In Parkinsonism. Biorphen Is Produced As A Sugar-Free Liquid Containing 25mg Orphensdrine Hydrochloride Per 5ml.
Medical Uses
Parkinsonism Including Drug- Induced Symptoms.
Dosage
Adults; 150mg Each Day At First In Divided Doses, Increasing By 50mg Every 2 Or 3 Days. Usual Maintenance Dose Is In The Order Of 150-300mg.
Special Care
Pregnant Women, Liver Or Kidney Disease.
Avoid Use
Children, Breastfeeding Mothers, Narrow Or Closed Angle Glaucoma, Urine Retention, Enlarged Prostate Gland, Porphyria (A Genetic Disorder In Which There Is An Abnormal Increase In The Production Of Porphyries In Bone Marrow, Causing Various Symptoms).
Possible Drug And Food Interactions
Antidepressants, Antihistamines, Phenothiazines, Disopyramide, Amantadine.
Known Side Effects
Dizziness, Gastrointestinal Disturbances, Urinary Difficulties, Distortion Of Vision, Dry Mouth.
