Burinex

What is it?

A loop diuretic preparation, (acting on the part of the kidney tubules called loops of Henle), available in the form of tablets of two strengths containing bumetanide. White, scored tablets marked 133 and with lion logo contain 1mg, those marked with strength contain 5mg.

Medical Uses

Oedema caused by congestive heart failure, liver and kidney disease including nephrotic syndrome.

Dosage

Adults, usually 1mg each day, according to response.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breast-feeding, diabetes, gout, liver or kidney disease, enlarged prostate gland, impaired micturition (urination). Potassium supplements may be needed.

Avoid Use

Children, patients in precomatose states as a result of liver cirrhosis.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Digitalis, lithium, antihypertensives, aminoglycosides.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal upset, cramps, skin rash, low blood potassium levels, enlarged breasts, thrombocytopenia.
