Cafergot
What is it?
An analgesic preparation containing ergotamine which is available as white, sugar-coated tablets containing 1mg ergotamine tartrate and 100mg caffeine. CAFERGOT SUPPOSITORIES contain 2mg ergotamine tartrate and 100mg caffeine.
Medical Uses
Migraine.
Dosage
1 or 2 tablets at start of attack with no more than 4 in 24 hours; should not be repeated within 4 days. Maximum dose, 8 tablets in one week. Suppositories, 1 at start of attack with maximum of 2 in 24 hours. Must not repeat within 4 days. Maximum dose, 4 suppositories in one week.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breast- feeding, liver or kidney disease, coronary, occlusive or peripheral vascular disease, sepsis, severe hypertension, Raynaud's disease. Should not be used to prevent migraine attack.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
B-bloekers, erythromycin, protease inhibitors.
Known Side Effects
Vomiting, nausea, abdominal pains, impairment of circulation (withdraw drug immediately), weakness in legs, pain affecting region in vicinity of heart. If pleural or retroperitoneal fibrosis occurs drug should be immediately stopped.
