Calciparine
What is it?
An anticoagulant available in the form of pre-filled syringes containing 25,000 units heparin calcium per use as subcutaneous injection only.
Medical Uses
Deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and prevention of these before surgery.
Dosage
5000 units 2 hours before surgery then every 8 to 12 hours for 7 days.
Special Care
Pregnancy, kidney or liver disease. Blood platelet counts are required and therapy should be halted in patients who develop thrombocytopenia.
Avoid Use
Patients with allergy to heparin, those with haemophilia, haemorrhagic disorders, severe hypertension, peptic ulcer, cerebral aneurysm, recent eye surgery or concerning central nervous system, serious liver disease.
Known Side Effects
Haemorrhage, thrombocytopenia, allergic reactions. After prolonged use, osteoporosis and rarely, baldness may occur.
