Calcium Resonium

What is it?

A calcium supplement which is an ion-exchange resin, available as 300g of powder comprising calcium polystyrene sulphonate.

Medical Uses

Hyperkylaemia (elevated potassium levels in blood) associated with diminished ability or failure to pass urine causing metabolic disturbance, or kidney dialysis.

Dosage

Adults: usual dose, 15g taken by mouth 3 to 4 times each day or 30g daily into rectum. Children: lg/kg body weight each day either by mouth or into rectum, in divided doses. New born infants and small children should receive treatment rectally.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, blood levels of potassium, calcium and other electrolytes must be monitored.

Avoid Use

Sarcoidosis, multiple myeloma (bone cancer), cancer which has spread and is causing kidney failure and elevated calcium levels, overactive parathyroid glands, low blood potassium levels less than 5mmo1/1, new born babies with certain conditions affecting the gut.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Magnesium or aluminium based preparations which are antacids or laxatives, sorbitol.

Known Side Effects

Lowered potassium levels in blood, elevated calcium or sodium levels in blood, impaction of faecal material, gastrointestinal disturbance.
