Calsynar

What is it?

A manufactured form of a hormone, calcitonin, which is concerned with the regulation of calcium levels in the body. It is produced in ampoules for injection and contains 100 units salcatnnin per ml in saline, (salcatonin is synthetic salmon calcitonin) or 200iu/ml. Calcitonin lowers levels of calcium in blood plasma by inhibiting resorption of bone.

Medical Uses

Osteoporosis in post-menopausal women, Paget's disease, hypercalcaemia, in bone cancer, hone pain resulting from cancer.

Dosage

Hypercalcaemia, initially, 400 units 6- to 8-hourly according to response, by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection to a maximum of 8 units per kg of body weight every 6 hours. Paget's disease of bone, 50 units 3 times each week to 100 units daily in single or divided doses, by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Post-menopausal osteoporosis, 100 units each day by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection along with 600mg calcium and 400 units vitamin D taken by mouth. Bone pain in cancer, 200 units every 6 hours or 400 units every 12 hours, for 48 hours by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Children should not receive therapy for more than a few weeks, as directed by physician.

Special Care

History of allergy, perform scratch skin test. Pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Cardiac glycosides.

Known Side Effects

Vomiting and nausea, tingling sensation in hands, flushing, allergic responses, unpleasant taste in mouth.
