Capastat
What is it?
A peptide antituberculous preparation available as a powder for reconstitution and injection. Capastat consists of 1 mega unit (million units) of eapreomycin sulphate (equivalent to approximately ig capreomycin).
Medical Uses
Treatment of tuberculosis which has failed to respond to other drugs.
Dosage
Usually lg each day given by deep intramuscular injection for a period of 60-120 days. Thereafter, lg 2 or 3 times a week by intramuscular injection.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breast-feeding, kidney and hearing disorders, history of liver disease or allergy. Liver, kidney and vestibular (concerned with balance and controlled by organs in the inner ear) functions should be monitored and hearing tests carried out.
Avoid Use
Children.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Other antibacterial drugs, streptomycin, viomycin, vancomycin, colistin, aminoglycosides.
Known Side Effects
Allergic reactions, e. g. skin rash and urticaria, changes in blood (thrombocytopenia, leucocytosis-an increased number of white blood cells, leucopenia), nephrotoxicity (toxic effects on the kidney), ototoxicity (damage to the organs of hearing and balance), liver damage, electrolyte level disturbances, loss of hearing accompanied by tinnitus and vertigo.
