What is it?
An Antihypertensive Preparation, Captopril, Which Is An ACE Inhibitor, Produced In Tablets Of 3 Strengths: 12.5mg, 25mg And 50mg. All White, Mottled And Marked SQUIBB And 450, 452 Or 482 Repectively.
Medical Uses
Mild To Moderate Hypertension (With Diuretics And Digitalis), Severe Hypertension, Where Other Methods Have Not Been Successful, Congestive Heart Failure (With Diuretics And Digitalis), Heart Attack In Which The Left Ventricle Is At Fault, Diabetic Nephropathy In Insulin-Dependent Diabetes.
Dosage
Adults, Mild To Moderate Hypertension, 12.5mg Twice Each Day At First With Usual Maintenance Dose In The Order Of 25mg Twice Daily. Maximum Dose Is 50mg Twice Each Day. Addition Of A Thiazide May Be Needed. Severe Hypertension, 12.5mg Twice Each Day At First, Increasing To A Maximum Of 50mg 3 Times Each Day If Needed. Diabetic Nephropathy, 75-100mg Each Day In Divided Doses. Heart Failure, 6.2512.5mg Daily At First Increasing To Usual Maintenance In The Order Of 25mg 2 Or 3 Times Each Day. Maximum Dose Is 150mg Each Day. N. B. Therapy Should Be Initiated In Hospital Under Strict Medical Supervision With Any Diuretics Being Stopped Or Reduced Before Treatment Begins. Post Heart Attack, 6.25mg Daily At First Beginning 3 Days After Attack Increasing To 150mg Daily In Divided Doses.
Special Care
Elderly Persons, Breast- Feeding, Severe Congestive Heart Failure, Kidney Disease, Reno-Vascular Hypertension, Aortic Stenosis, Acute Hypertensive Crisis. Those With Collagen Vascular Disease. White Blood Cell Counts And Checks On Protein In Urine And Kidney Function Should Be Carried Out Before And During Therapy. Contact Manufacturer Before Use In Children.
Avoid Use
Pregnancy, Various Heart Disorders (Aortic Stenosis, Outflow Obstruction).
Possible Drug And Food Interactions
NSAIDs, Potassium Supplements, Potassium-Sparing Diuretics, Immunosuppressants, Vasodilators, Antidiabetic Drugs, Allopurinol, Probenecid, Clonidine, Procainamide, Lithium.
