What is it?

Activated charcoal availableas granules for mixing with water.

Medical Uses

Acute poisoning and drug overdose.

Dosage

Adults; 50g in water either by mouth or intragastric tube as soon as possible after ingesting substance. Dose may be repeated up to total of 200g over 4 to 8 hours following poisoning. Children; 25 to 50g which may be repeated, if needed.

Special Care

Additional treatment is usually needed, depending upon the nature of the poison.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Emetics and other antidotes given by mouth.
