Cardilate MR
What is it?
A Class 11 calcium antagonist available as film-coated, modified-release tablets in two different strengths. Pink tablets contain 10mg of nifedipine and brown tablets contain 20mg.
Medical Uses
Prevention of angina, hypertension.
Dosage
Adults, start with 10mg twice daily at 12 hour intervals then titrate to increase according to response. Maximum dose is 40mg every 12 hours.
Special Care
Elderly patients, liver disorders, dialysis patients, weak heart, heart failure, severe low blood pressure.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, unstable angina, heart shock, severe aortic stenosis arising within 4 weeks of heart attack.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Digoxin, anti- hypertensives, diltiazem, quinidine, rifampicin, cimetidine, magnesium sulphate given intravenously, grapefruit juice.
Known Side Effects
Low blood pressure, disturbed/raised heartbeat rate, weakness and lethargy, headaches, disturbance of vision, trembling, gastrointestinal upset, muscle pain, skin rashes, effects on gums, enlargement of breasts, increased urination, heart attack, heart pain (withdraw).
