Cardura XL
What is it?
A selective α1-blocker available as white, sustained-release tablets (with a hole) in two different strengths, containing 4mg and 8mg of doxazosin (as mesylate), respectively. Also, CARDURA TABLETS, pentagonal, white tablets contain 1mg doxazosin (as mesylate), marked PFIZER DXPl; oval, white tablets contain 2mg doxazosin (as mesylate), marked PFIZER DXP2.
Medical Uses
High blood pressure, obstructed outflow of urine associated with benign enlargement of the prostate gland.
Dosage
Adults, CarduraXL: at first, one 4mg tablet swallowed whole once each day, increasing if necessary to 8mg after one month of treatment. Cardura tablets: at first, single 1mg tablet once each day, increasing as required after 7 to 14 days to 2mg and then 4mg once daily. The maximum daily dose is 16mg.
Special Care
Pregnancy, liver disorders.
Avoid Use
Children, breastfeeding, history of gastrointestinal obstruction (applies only to CarduraXL).
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Nausea, headache, weakness, dizziness, vertigo, tiredness, sleepiness, fluid retention, irritation of nasal passages (runny nose). More rarely, effects on blood, blurred vision, priapism, itching and skin rash, urinary incontinence, pain in abdomen, impotence, liver disorders, gastrointestinal upset, agitation, cholestasis, blood in urine, nose bleeds.
