Cefrom

What is it?

An antibacterial/antibiotic preparation of cephalosporin available as lg or 2g of powder in vials for reconstitution and injection, containing cefpirome as sulphate. For use in hospital.

Medical Uses

Soft tissue, skin and lower respiratory tract infections. Bacteraemia, neutropenia, septicaemia, complicated urinary tract infections.

Dosage

Adults, 1102 g given by intravenous infusion over half an hour or by intravenous bolus over 3 to 5 minutes.

Special Care

Elderly persons, those with kidney impairment, known allergy to B-lactam antibiotics.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Loop diuretics, aminoglycosides.

Known Side Effects

Reactions at injection site, allergic responses, blood changes, elevated liver enzymes and creatinine, alterations in taste, gastrointestinal upset. Rarely, pseudomembranous colitis, superinfections, interstitial nephritis (kidney inflammation).
