Cefzil

What is it?

An antibacterial!antibiotic cephalosporin preparation, available as tablets in two different strengths containing cefprozil. Capsule-shaped, orange tablets contain 250mg; capsule-shaped, white tablets contain 500mg. Also, CEFZIL SUSPENSION, available as an off-white powder for dilution in water containing 250mg per 5ml of solution.

Medical Uses

Skin structure and skin infections, upper respiratory tract infections, infections of the middle ear, acute flare-ups of chronic bronchitis.

Dosage

Adults, all except infections in bronchitis, 500mg once each day for 10 days; bronchitis, 500mg twice each day for 10 days. Children aged over 6 months, all conditions except middle ear infections, 20mg per kg of body weight once each day; middle ear infections, 20mg per kg of body weight twice each day.

Special Care

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, known allergy to penicillins, serious kidney disorders, phenylketonuria (PKU - a metabolic disorder). Also, previous tendency to gastrointestinal disorders, especially colitis - drug should be withdrawn if diarrhoea occurs.

Avoid Use

Babies under 6 months old.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Probenecid, glucose tests.

Known Side Effects

Nappy rash, itching in genital area, vaginitis, gastrointestinal upset, superinfection, dizziness. Raised levels of certain enzymes, raised levels of eosinophils (white blood cells) as a result of infection.
