Celebrex

What is it?

An NSAID available as capsules in two different strengths containing celecoxib. White capsules containing 100mg are marked with a pair of blue bands and 7767 and 100; white capsules containing 200mg are marked with paired gold bands and 7767 and 200.

Medical Uses

Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis.

Dosage

Adults, rheumatoid arthritis, 200 to 400mg each day, divided into two doses; osteoarthritis, 100mg once each day or divided into two doses.

Special Care

Elderly persons aged over 65 years and black patients should be started on lower doses due to possible greater sensitivity. Oedema, risk of hypovolaemia (low blood volume), heart failure, malfunction of left ventricle of heart, liver or kidney disease, high blood pressure. Women of childbearing age should use contraception.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, history of allergy to NSAIDs or sulfonamides, active gastrointestinal bleeding or ulceration, serious congestive heart failure, severe liver or kidney disorders, inflammatory disorders of the bowel.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Oral contraceptives, rifampicin, drugs metabolised by CYP2D6 or CYP2C 19, carbamazepine, ACE inhibitors, fluconazole, diuretics, anticoagulants, barbiturates, antihypertensives, tacrolimus, methotrexate (monitor patient), cyclosporin, lithium.

Known Side Effects

Disorders of the upper respiratory tract, gastrointestinal upset, skin rashes, insomnia, fluid retention, dizziness. Any adverse effects should be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
