Celectol

What is it?

An antihypertensive which is a cardioselective 131-blocker and partial 132-agonist. It is produced in heart-shaped tablets of 2 strengths, yellow scored tablets (200mg celiprolol hydrochloride) and white tablets (400mg). The tablets are film- coated and marked with logo and strength.

Medical Uses

Mild to moderate hypertension.

Dosage

Adults, 200mg once each day half an hour before food, maximum dose 400mg.

Special Care

Pregnancy, nursing mothers, anaesthesia or planned surgery, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, metabolic acidosis. Patients with weak hearts should receive diuretic and digitalis. Patients with history of bronchospasm. Drug should be gradually withdrawn.

Avoid Use

Children, patients with forms of heart disease including heart block, heart failure, slow heart beat rate; sick sinus syndrome, peripheral arterial disease. Patients with obstructive airways disease (unless absolutely no alternative).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Sympathomimetics, central nervous system depressants, indomethacin, antihypertensives, ergotamine, reserpine, cimetidine, cardiac depressant anaesthetics, hypoglycaemics, verapamil, Class I antiarrhythmics, clonidine withdrawal.

Known Side Effects

Gastrointestinal disorders, fatigue with exercise, cold feet and hands, disruption of sleep, slow heartbeat rate. If dry eyes or skin rash occur, drug should be gradually withdrawn.
