What is it?
A combined thiazide diuretic and potassium supplement available as tablets containing 2.5mg bendrofluazide and 573mg of potassium chloride.
Medical Uses
Chronic fluid retention, high blood pressure, prevention of calcium kidney stones.
Dosage
Adults, fluid retention, 2 to 4 tablets each day at first reducing to 2 to 4 tablets up to three times each week for maintenance. High blood pressure, 1 tablet each day; prevention of kidney stones, 2 to 3 tablets each day, taken in morning with at least 100ml of water.
Special Care
Elderly, pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, cirrhosis of liver, gout, porphyria (an inherited disorder involving abnormally increased production of porphyrins-pigments), SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus). Glucose, electrolytes and fluid levels must be monitored during treatment.
Avoid Use
Children, serious liver or kidney disease, absence of urination, raised blood levels of calcium or potassium, raised levels of uric acid in urine, low sodium levels in blood. Also, allergy to sulfonamide drugs, precomatose states caused by severe liver cirrhosis, blockage of the gastrointestinal tract, Crohn's disease, Addison's disease.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Nsaid's, potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, alcohol, lithium, opioids, barbiturates, carbenoxolone, antidiabetic agents, cardiac glycosides, corticosteroids, tubocurarine.
Known Side Effects
Metabolic and electrolyte disturbances, anorexia, gastrointestinal upset, pancreatitis, blood changes, impotence, sensitivity to light, skin rashes, dizziness, drug should be withdrawn if any signs of obstruction or ulceration of bowel arise.
