Cetrotide
What is it?
A synthetic hormonal preparation which is an LHRH (luteinizing hormone releasing hormone) antagonist. It competes with the body's own LHRH to reduce the secretion of luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone and is used to control the operation of the ovaries in women undergoing certain types of fertility treatment. Available as a powder containing 0.25mg or 3mg of Cetrotide as acetate in vials with solvent in pre-filled syringes.
Medical Uses
Following treatment with gonadotrophins (other hormones involved in reproduction), in the control of the ovaries to prevent premature ovulation in women undergoing fertility treatment, in order to produce and collect eggs.
Dosage
Women, 0.25mg by subcutaneous injection into wall of lower abdomen once each day, beginning 96 to 120 hours after gonadotrophin treatment to stimulate the ovaries. Or, a single 3mg injection on the 7th day of gonadotrophin stimulation. Other regimes may be applicable in certain circumstances.
Special Care
Active allergies, repeated ovarian cycles.
Avoid Use
Ensure no pregnancy before treatment, breastfeeding, postmenopausal women, liver or kidney disorders, unless slight.
Known Side Effects
Sickness, headache, allergic responses, reactions at injection site. Any adverse side effects must be reported to the Committee on the Safety of Medicines (CSM).
