Cidomycin
What is it?
An aminoglycoside antibiotic containing gentamicin as sulphate, produced for injection. Cidomycin injection contains 40mg gentamicin (as sulphate) per ml in ampoules and vials. CIDOMYCIN PAEDIATRIC INJECTION contains 10mg/ml in 2ml vials. CIDOMYCIN INTRATHECAL INJECTION contains 5mg/ml in ampoules.
Medical Uses
Cidomycin, Cidomycin paediatric injection: serious infections sensitive to gentamicin; urinary tract infections. Cidomycin intrathecal injection, ventriculitis, bacterial meningitis.
Dosage
Adults, Cidomycin, 5mg per kg of body weight by intramuscular or intravenous injection daily in 3 or 4 divided doses, for 1 week to 10 days. Children, use Cidomycin paediatric, up to 2 weeks of age, 3mg per kg of body weight at 12 hour intervals; over 2 weeks old, 2mg per kg of body weight at 8-hour intervals. Both intramuscularly or intravenously for a period of 7-10 days. Cidomycin intrathecal, according to manufacturer's instructions under supervision of specialist physician.
Special Care
Patients with kidney disease, myasthenia gravis; regular blood tests necessary as blood concentrations over 10 g/ml can cause damage to the organs of hearing and balance.
Avoid Use
Pregnant women.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Anaesthetics, neuromuscular blocking drugs, frusemide, ethacrynic acid.
Known Side Effects
Toxicity affecting organs of hearing and balance and kidneys.
