Ciproxin

What is it?

A 4-quinolone antibiotic, ciprofloxacin hydrochloride monohydrate, as tablets of 4 different strengths and as a suspension. White, film-coated tablets, marked with BAYER logo and CIP 100 contain 100mg; BAYER logo and CIP 250 contain 250mg; BAYER logo and CIP 500 (500mg); marked with BAYER logo and CIP 750 (750mg). CIPROXIN SUSPENSION contains 250mg ciprofloxacin per 5ml, available as granules with a non-aqueous diluent.

Medical Uses

Ear, nose, throat, respiratory tract infections. Skin, bone, joint, soft tissue and eye infections. Also, pelvic and gastro-intestinal infections, gonorrhoea and pneumonia caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Prevention of infection in endoscopy and surgery on upper gastrointestinal tract, inhalation anthrax. In children, acute pulmonary flare-up of cystic fibrosis associated with infection by the organism, P aeruginosa.

Dosage

Adults, tablets, 100mg to 750mg twice each day for 5 to 10 days. For gonorrhoea, one 250mg dose. For prevention of infection, 750mg 1 hour to 11/2 hours before operation. For gonorrhoea, 100mg by intravenous infusion. Uncomplicated cystitis in women, 100mg 2 times each day for 3 days. Inhalation anthrax, 500mg twice each day. Children, acute flare-up of cystic fibrosis, ages 5 to 17 years, 20mg per kg of body weight twice each day for 10 to 14 days; inhalation anthrax, 15mg per kg of body weight twice each day to a maximum of 1000mg total dose. Other exceptional conditions, 5 to 15mg per kg twice each day. Also, CIPROXIN INFUSION, available in infusion bags or bottles as a solution containing 2mg of ciprofloxacin per ml.

Medical Uses

Some of severe conditions listed above where tablets are not appropriate.

Dosage

Adults, 100 to 400mg by intravenous infusion over 30 minutes to 1 hour twice each day for 5 days to 1 week, depending upon severity of infection and response. Gonorrhoea, 100mg; inhalation anthrax, 400mg by intravenous infusion over 1 hour period, twice each day. Children aged 5 to 17 years, 10mg per kg of body weight by intravenous infusion over 1 hour, 3 times each day - for acute flare-up of cystic fibrosis. Inhalation anthrax, 10mg per kg of body weight by intravenous infusion twice each day to a maximum daily dose of 800mg. Other severe conditions, 4 to 8mg per kg of body weight by intravenous infusion twice each day.

Special Care

Severe kidney disorders (half doses), epilepsy or disorders of central nervous system, history of convulsions. Plenty of fluids should be drunk or patient well hydrated, operating machinery or driving, G-6-PD deficiency.

Avoid Use

Children aged under 5 years, all children and adolescents (except in exceptional circumstances outlined above), pregnancy, breast-feeding, tendon disorders.

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Probenecid, premedicants, NSAIDs, opiates, theophylline (levels must be monitored or ciproxin should not be used), cyclosporin (serum creatinine levels must be monitored), glibenclamide, iron, magnesium, calcium or aluminium salts, metoclopramide, corticosteroids, oral anticoagulants.

Known Side Effects

Headache, central nervous system effects, gastrointestinal disturbances, liver, kidney and blood changes, cardiovascular effects. Weakness, skin rash, allergic responses, pains in joints.
