Clinoril
What is it?
A proprietary analgesic NSAID (indene), produced in the form of hexagonal, yellow, scored tablets containing 100mg or 200mg sulindac and marked MSD 943 and MSD 942 respectively.
Medical Uses
Inflammation and pain in rheumatic diseases including gouty arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, peri-articular diseases, ankylosing spondylitis and osteoarthritis.
Dosage
Adults, 200mg twice each day with food or drink.
Special Care
Elderly persons, diabetes, history of lithiasis (gallstones, kidney stones, stones in lower urinary tract), sepsis, patients with heart failure, liver or kidney disease (monitor function), history of gastro-intestinal haemorrhage or ulcers. Also, coagulation disorders (monitor), those at risk of fluid retention. Eye disorders should be investigated and plenty of fluids should be taken.
Avoid Use
Children, pregnancy, breast- feeding, allergy to aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs, those with gastrointestinal bleeding or peptic ulcer.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Aspirin, anticoagulants, diflunisal, hypoglycaemic drugs, methotrexate, dimethyl sulfoxide, cyclosporin, other NSAIDs, drugs toxic to the kidneys.
Known Side Effects
Allergic responses including liver failure and fever (stop drug immediately). Disturbance of vision, central nervous system effects, heart arrhythmias, changes in blood, kidney stones and disturbance of kidney function, pancreatitis, hyperglycaemia, gastro-intestinal bleeding and upset. Also, rash, dizziness, glossitis (inflammation of tongue), tinnitus, muscle weakness, effects on urine including discolouration, proteinuria (protein in urine), crystals in urine (crystalluria), oedema, Stevens- Johnson syndrome.
