Codafen Continus
What is it?
A combined opiate analgesic and NSAID produced as pink/ white, two-layered, capsule-shaped tablets containing 20mg codeine phosphate and 300mg of sustained- release ibuprofen.
Medical Uses
Relief of pain including postoperative, rheumatic/arthritic conditions, dental and period pain.
Dosage
Adults, 2 tablets every 12 hours at first increasing to 3 tablets every 12 hours if needed. Maintenance dose is 1 to 3 tablets each 12 hours.
Special Care
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergy to anti-inflammatory drugs or aspirin. Those with liver, kidney or heart disease, heart failure, hypotension, hypothyroidism, head injury, elevated intraeranial pressure, high blood pressure, history of bronchospasm. Monitor those having longterm treatment.
Avoid Use
Children, patients with peptic ulcer or history of peptic ulcer, respiratory depression, breathing disorders, chronic constipation.
Possible Drug and Food Interactions
Anticoagulants taken bymouth, thiazides, MAOIs, quinolones.
Known Side Effects
Dizziness, blurring of vision, headache, gastro-intestinal upset and bleeding, peptic ulcer, drowsiness. Rarely, disturbance of liver and kidney function, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis (abnormal blood disorder in which there is a reduction in the number of certain white blood cells), respiratory depression.
