Combivir

What is it?

An anti-HIV drug containing nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, available as white, capsule- shaped, film-coated tablets, marked GXFC3, containing 300mg of zidovudine and 150mg of lamivudine,

Medical Uses

Combination treatment for HIV.

Dosage

Adults, 1 tablet twice each day.

Special Care

Mild to moderate liver or kidney disease - function should be monitored before treatment starts and during the course of therapy.

Avoid Use

Children, pregnancy, breastfeeding, serious liver or kidney disease, certain blood counts (of neutrophils and haemoglobin).

Possible Drug and Food Interactions

Dapsone, codeine, isoprinosine, zalcitebine, pentamidine, trimethoprim, co-trimoxazole, vinblastine, ketoprofen, ganciclovir, amphotericin, probenecid, foscarnet, morphine, lorazepam, pyrimethamine, flucytosine, vincristine, tribavirin, aspirin, indomethacin, oxazepam, cimetidine, naproxen, interferon, doxorubicin.

Known Side Effects

Malaise, headache, muscle pain, fever, anaemia, gastrointestinal upset, weakness, insomnia, anorexia, blood changes (leucopenia, neutropenia), enlargement of liver, hepatitis, paraesthesia (tingling, numbness), cerebral disturbances, convulsions. Pancreatitis has occurred rarely.
